More about us...
For those that teach and love reading, there is no arguing the fact that kids that start early, finish strong. Research shows that early literacy education and intervention are key. Offering literacy tools and support to young mothers and fathers should be an area of focus within the Astoria community. The Astor“y”a Family Book Club, a group formed by the Astoria Elementary Reading Room, has been awarded $2,500.00 to support this effort through a literacy initiative called Little Lap Learners. Through the generous support of the Tracy Family Foundation, Little Lap Learners will be able to provide a starter library for every baby born within the Astoria School District. The Little Lap Learners program will provide outreach and early contact to parents within the district. It will also increase the visibility of the lifelong benefits of reading to very young children, perpetuate the value of literacy within the community, and provide many families with quality books. The Tracy Family Foundation is based in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, and is supported by Dot Foods, Inc., also of Mt. Sterling. The Foundation is known for their continued support of positive development of youth and families. Babies that are born after January 1, 2015 and that live within the Astoria School District are eligible to apply for a Little Lap Learners Library. To request a library, please register below.
